We all know we are supposed to drink enough water. But how many of us really do?
I doubt it’s many of us. The recommendation is to drink six or eight 8-ounce glasses of water or other fluid every day. But some people may need more or less, depending on how healthy they are, how much they exercise, and how hot and dry the it is. You also need to drink more water you’re pregnant or breastfeeding so be sure ask your doctor, but it’s generally an additional 10 to 30 ounces of fluids.
I’m not just talking about grownups either, kids need water too. Keeping kids hydrated helps them be healthier!
Reasons to make sure you drink enough water
Water keeps every part of your body working properly. It helps your body flush wastes and stay at the right temperature. This is so important!
Did you know you lose water throughout the day-through your breath, sweat, urine, and bowel movements. If you live somewhere hot, you lose even more fluid. In order to stay healthy, you need to replace this fluid by drinking water. If you don’t get enough water, you could become dehydrated. Dehydration can be dangerous because your body no longer has enough fluid to get blood to your organs.
Need help to make sure you drink enough water?
- Carry a water bottle for easy access when you are at work or running errands.
- Choose water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. This tip can also help with calorie intake management. Substituting water for one 20-ounce sugar-sweetened soda will save you about 240 calories.
- Choose water instead of other beverages when eating out.
- Give your water a little pizzazz by adding a wedge of lime or lemon. This may improve the taste, and you just might drink more water than you usually do.
